Novell Evolution Email and Calendaring

Novell® Evolution™ is the most widely used Linux collaboration software in the world. It integrates email, calendaring, contact management, and tasks into one easy-to-use application. As part of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, Novell Evolution integrates smoothly with other applications and communications tools and connects to Novell GroupWise® and Microsoft Exchange.

Key Features

Standards Support

  • Novell Evolution embraces mail, calendar and address book standards to ease data sharing.
  • Supports mail protocols include IMAP, POP, SMTP and authenticated SMTP, as well as Microsoft Exchange 2000, 2003, and 2007. Novell GroupWise support is also supported.
  • iCalendar support allows you in disparate collaboration servers to share meeting information, publish this information and subscribe to calendars published on the web (webcal).
  • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) support enables you to access existing company address books. You can also share contact information using vCard message attachments.

Security and Encryption

  • Industry-standard encryption, including support for PGP / GPG, SASL and SSL / TLS, ensures message security.

E-mail Client

  • Novell Evolution connects to corporate communications architectures, including Microsoft Exchange (including Exchange 2007) and Novell GroupWise (including GroupWise 8).
  • The message composer auto-completes email addresses stored in the Contacts list.
  • View options allow you to view email chronologically, by author or by thread. Custom folders can be color-coded to note priority or type, and vFolders, dynamic saved searches, provide convenient access to messages spread across multiple folders.
  • User-defined filters automatically move or process incoming and outgoing mail into specific, customizable folders. Account-management tools enable you to receive, manage and organize messages from multiple email accounts.
  • Integration with SpamAssassin enables client-side junk-mail filtering.
  • Enhanced offline access for IMAP mail is also included in Novell Evolution.

Calendar

  • You can create customized reminders for your events that open windows or play sounds. A "snooze-button" feature allows you to delay the reminder.
  • iCalendar support enables you to arrange appointments and schedule meetings with Microsoft Exchange, and other applications that support the iCalendar standard.
  • Group scheduling helps you schedule meetings, view attendee availability and allocate resources with other users in organizations running on Microsoft Exchange.
  • Free / busy searches enable you to publish and view schedules to facilitate the planning of group meetings.
  • The new overlay feature enables you to view multiple calendars so they can see your personal calendars as well as those of coworkers, work groups and others in a single color-coded view. This allows you to see conflicts or possible events without using the free / busy search.
  • Support for web-based and multiple local calendars extends the ability to add any valid .ics file to calendar views, allowing you or workgroups to track events without leaving the Novell Evolution Calendar view.
  • Support for viewing and creating entries on Google calendars.

Contact Management

  • You can keep track of your business associates, friends and family by adding them to your contact list and maintaining multiple contact folders.
  • LDAP support enables you to access existing company address books without changing collaboration infrastructure.
  • Userscan saves time with address auto-completion, a feature that uses locally stored contacts or those found in LDAP directories to automatically complete email addresses.

Task and To-do List

  • You can organize your work by entering to-do items into the task component. Summary, description, due dates, priorities, and categories can be entered. You can then view your items by date, priority, deadlines and other criteria or view tasks in the integrated calendar view.

Search Folder Support

  • Search folders are stored searches that enable you to organize email.
  • Folders can be created that automatically list emails matching user-defined rules, for example all email from a particular address or all email that includes a specific keyword.
  • The Search Folder can be defined to work across all mail folders (local and remote) or a just a subset. This gives you the flexibility to organize your message archive in a number of ways.
  • Coupled with the use of message filtering, processing and sorting emails can be significantly automated.

Extensible Architecture

  • Novell Evolution includes the new Novell Evolution Data Server component that exposes Evolution-accessible data (such as mail, calendar and contacts) to the rest of the desktop applications. For example, you can view appointments and tasks in the desktop panel calendar, display appointment reminders in the panel notification area and add buddies to your instant messaging client by adding them to the Novell Evolution address book.
  • You can access, edit and update email, address book, calendars, and task folders on Novell GroupWise servers from within Novell Evolution. You can also access the GroupWise Address Book for names, addresses and other contact information. Furthermore, you can enter Novell GroupWise Messenger information in the Personal Contacts feature for easy, secure, instant messaging via Gaim.
  • You can issue meeting invitations and view colleague availability.

Built-in Microsoft Exchange Support

  • You can communicate directly with built-in WebDAV support, eliminating the need to maintain separate IMAP email server access to support Linux and UNIX users.
  • From within Novell Evolution, you can view, edit and update email, address books, calendars and task folders on the Exchange server.
  • Using existing global address lists, you can access names, addresses and contact information from the Exchange Global Address List.
  • Public folder support allows you to share documents and files in existing Exchange public folders. You can also create new public folders for collaboration.
  • Through the Manage Permissions feature, you can control access to personal and public folders, calendars and task lists.
  • With the proper authorization, you can open other users' calendars or shared folders.
  • The Out-of-Office Assistant helps you create custom vacation or notification messages that run on the Exchange server.
  • Through the Calendar Delegation feature, you can set permissions to allow others to view your calendars. You can also delegate permission to a colleague (for example, an administrative assistant) to accept and schedule meetings in your calendar.
  • Direct resource booking reserves resources such as conference rooms or vehicles for your meetings and appointments.
  • The new mailbox- and folder-size features display Exchange server quota notifications to keep mailbox sizes down.

Built-in Novell GroupWise Support

  • You can communicate directly with built-in WebDAV support, eliminating the need to maintain separate IMAP email server access to support Linux and UNIX users.
  • From within Novell Evolution, you can view, edit and update email, address books, calendars and task folders on the GroupWise server.
  • Using existing global address lists, you can access names, addresses and contact information from the GroupWise Address List.
  • You can create shared folders to enable collaboration.
  • You can define GroupWise filters to process incoming messages and take specific actions. For example, a filter can be set-up for out-of-office replies.
  • Direct resource booking reserves resources such as conference rooms or vehicles for your meetings and appointments.
