It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Julie Baldwin, Senior Director, Global Alliances, Cloud Service Providers, from SUSE for being recognized by CRN in the 2019 Women of the Channel. This is the first time someone from SUSE has been included in this listing. Julie is relatively new to SUSE, having joined the ranks in December 2018.

“Women are significantly underrepresented in IT jobs and at IT companies. In the U.S., more women now graduate college than men. Last year, 57% of all college graduates were women, yet only 25% of all IT jobs in the U.S. are held by women today.” (Source: IDC, 2018 Women in Tech: Unconscious Bias, Parity, and the Path Forward, October 2018)

It is reassuring to see a woman brought into SUSE in a leadership position and poised to drive partner and channel growth as we stretch our legs as the largest independent open source company. When Julie took the stage at our recent SUSECON Partner Summit in April, it signaled a change with a female presence. While working at SUSE, I have had the privilege to work under the strong leadership of women. My manager, Jamie Rahbany, who’s the Head of Americas Marketing is a woman, and she in turns reports to a woman, Joanne Harris, Vice President of Marketing. They are helping shape the future of SUSE and drive success.

It is uplifting to know that initiatives like Girls Who Code are leveling the playing field for women in technology, offering opportunities to get exposure and develop computer science skills in a supportive environment. STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) promotion is an important element to cultivate interest, provide positive experiences and reinforce networks. Plus, there are roles outside tech specific jobs within technology companies for women to explore.

Encourage girls to engage in STEM activities and women to seek leadership roles in tech companies. On the heels of worldwide Mother’s Day celebrations, it is a great time to rejoice in the power of women to shape our future through technology. You go girls!
