Here When You Need Us

After enabling Desktop Effects (compiz) the desktop does not display correctly.

This document (7002988) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11

Situation

Enabled the Desktop Effects in the Control Center but now after logging out or rebooting the login screen is displayed but after login the desktop does not come up or a gray screen is displayed.

Resolution

At the login screen press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch you to VT1 (or TTY1) which is a text based console.  Login as your normal user and run the following commands to disable the Desktop Effects (or compiz):

rm -f ~/.config/compiz/enable-compiz

touch ~/.config/compiz/disable-compiz

Type "logout" or "exit" to logout as your user.  Then press Ctrl-Alt-F7 to return to the graphic login screen.

Login as your normal user and see if the problem is corrected.  If the system runs fine after following these steps to disable Desktop Effects, then the graphics card or associated driver is not compatible for use with compiz.
