/var partition out of space

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3

Situation

Using df -h shows /var is at 100%, however, upon checking the size of the partition, and the space used on that partition (du /var -csh), it is found the /var partition is not full.

Resolution

/proc/kcore is a virtual copy of the server's RAM.

NTP can be run in a chrooted environment where the /proc directory is mapped to /var/lib/ntp/proc.

Sometimes the OS can become confused and believe the kcore file is physical, instead of virtual, thus causing it to also believe the /var partition is out of space.

As a work-around to experiencing this issue, do the following:

1. Edit /etc/sysconfig/ntp

2. Change "NTPD_RUN_CHROOTED" from "yes" to "no".

3. Reboot the server to refresh the server's RAM.
