Disabling of LVM Monitor in Cluster (OPENAIS HEARTBEAT)

This document (7008620) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

If there is heavy load on the system the monitor function of the LVM Resource Agent can fail with Return code -2 unknown.
The reason for this is, that the check is relatively heavy on the system and involves a vgscan over all devices configured in the filter section of lvm.conf
Being configured with a default of 10 seconds monitor interval and a 30 seconds timeout on this monitor this function creates also some load on most systems.

Resolution

The solution is to disable the monitor function on the LVM Resource in the cluster by removing it. The Resource will still start and stop and will show up in the GUI with the correct Status from these operations. But considering that the Volume Group is normally only a part of a stack there is the device underneath and a Filesystem above that will be monitored by the cluster.
So under normal circumstances it is safe to disable the monitor function on the LVM Resource and also best practice.
