Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2

Situation

The update 7007 (patch-id) for the 'login' package (login-3.41-0.4.2), released on Dec-14-2012 might expose a problem in some servers that use telnetd and rlogind.

Telnet or rlogin sessions to servers that applied the update might show symptoms like missing characters and/or line breaks.

Resolution

A kernel that fixes this issue was released on Feb-08-2013. Please update to kernel version >= 3.0.58-0.6.2.1

Cause

The bugfix for the 'login' Package, which forces to drop all references to a TTY which want to hangup (to reach reference count 1), has revealed a long lasting kernel issue (reset TTY packet mode). The PTF Kernel fixes this issue and do not reset the packet mode any longer.
