Following its success in 1998 and 1999, Linux continued to be the fastest-growing server operating system in the past year. According to the latest figures published by the International Data Corporation (IDC), in 2000 Linux had a share of 27 percent of the server operating systems new license shipments, which represents a sales increase of 24 percent over 1999.
Though the number of server operating systems sold increased by a total of 9.2 percent from 1999 to 2000, Netware and Unix experienced a setback. Only Sun's Solaris was able to gain in 2000, whereas SCO Unix clearly fell short of the sales figures of the previous year. IBM AIX and HP-UX managed to remain on a similar level as before.
