The SUSE Linux 7.1 Japanese edition offers professional users all the tools necessary to execute various server and desktop tasks, including Kernel 2.4, glibc 2.2, Logical Volume Manager, ReiserFS, and LDAP, as well as an improved KDE desktop supporting Japanese. In addition to databases, the Japanese edition includes server applications for e-mail, e-commerce, Web, FTP, and file serving. SUSE Linux 7.1 Japanese Edition also offers Japanese fonts and input methods, a Japanese / English dictionary interface, and the typesetting system CJK-LaTeX, which is suitable for Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Numerous office tools such as Netscape 4.76 or the graphics program Gimp complete the software portfolio.

"The Japanese interest in Linux is very strong. Although SUSE core market is presently in Europe and the US, the Asian market has enormous potential and we are eager to get a feedback from Japanese users. One of SuSE^Òs strengths is that all international versions of SUSE Linux are compatible. This is crucial in order to position SUSE as a truly global player", said Dirk Hohndel, CTO of SUSE Linux AG.

"SAP has very positive experiences with Linux as a reliable, stable, and scalable platform for mySAP.com e-business solutions in international operations," said Harald Kuck, Head of Internet Server Development at SAP. "The availability of SUSE Linux in localized versions makes Linux an even more attractive option for global deployment."

"With the scalability enhancements in the new 2.4 kernel, Japanese customers can now take advantage of the most powerful version of SuSE Linux to date," said Dick Sullivan, vice president, Solutions and Integration Marketing, IBM Software. "When coupled with the proven enterprise capability of IBM's server and software products, including DB2 Universal Database, WebSphere Application Server, and Lotus Domino, Japanese customers and solution providers should see an increase in overall performance to complement the cost and reliability advantages of Linux."

SUSE Linux is available for IA32, IA64, PowerPC, Alpha, SPARC, and S/390 processors. Complete SUSE Linux packages for IA32 consisting of CD-ROMs and manuals can be obtained in Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.
