HOWTO: Disable startup beep on SLES11 (and openSUSE 11.1)

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
openSUSE 11.1

Situation

Beginning with SLES11 and openSUSE 11.1, there is a startup beep when the GRUB screen is displayed. 
This feature was added to improve accessibility, but can be an inconvenience to some users.

Resolution

To disable the beep, execute the following command (as root)

   gfxboot--change-config boot::beep=0
