SUSE Linux Standard Server 8 offers low price plus easy installation and administration

Oakland, CA

SUSE Linux today announced the expansion of the SUSE Linux Server family with the release of SUSE Linux Standard Server 8 - aimed at small and medium-sized businesses.

Available for Intel and AMD 32-bit processors (x86) and supporting up to two CPUs, SUSE Linux Standard Server 8 includes features such as Internet access, e-mail, file and print services, plus graphical configuration wizards - enabling Linux novices in small and medium-sized organizations to easily set up the server as a Windows domain controller, file and print server in Windows environments, Internet gateway, E-Mail server, application server, DNS server and DHCP server.

"By expanding the SUSE Linux Server family with SUSE Linux Standard Server, we give smaller organizations and departments a versatile solution that incorporates all the functionality they expect from a server operating system," said Juergen Geck, chief technology officer, SUSE Linux. "Customers will be excited about Standard Server's usability, saving both time and costs for the implementation and administration of their IT networks."

Easy setup - Efficient user administration

With its graphical user interface and configuration wizards, SUSE Linux Standard Server 8 can be set up in a convenient way. For the installation, users just enter network address, information on the Internet provider and company/user name. SUSE Linux Standard Server 8 includes webbased remote administration and provides external staff members secure access to company data via Virtual Privat Network (VPN).

In SUSE Linux Standard Server 8, user data are administered in a central directory service (LDAP). The detailed administration of permissions using Access Control Lists (ACL) ensures data security. SUSE Linux Standard Server 8 enables the quick and easy configuration and modification of ACLs even from remote hosts.

Client hosts can easily be connected to SUSE Linux Standard Server. The automatic allocation of network IP addresses (DHCP) can be configured by means of a graphical interface. Windows machine domain accounts are set up automatically.

Pricing, Availability and Surrounding Services

Available at the beginning of November, SUSE Linux Standard Server 8 can be obtained at the SUSE online shop and SUSE Linux resellers. The product price of $ 449.00 includes the software, documentation, installation support and one year of participation in the SUSE Linux Maintenance Program for one server with up to two CPUs.
