Decarbonization

We take a scientific approach to climate action by decarbonizing our business and value chain while delivering energy-efficient products and solutions for our customers. We deliver this by setting science-based emissions reduction targets aligned with industry standards.

"I’m proud that our emissions targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). We are committed as a business to do what we can to mitigate climate change. Together with colleagues, suppliers, customers and partners we will work to reduce our environmental impact”.
Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, Chief Executive Officer at SUSE

Our Targets

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated that our GHG emissions reduction targets conform with the SBTi criteria and recommendations and has determined that it aligns with a 1.5°C trajectory necessary to reach net-zero emissions by mid-century.

SUSE commits to the following with 2021 considered as a base year:

  • Reduce our absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030.
  • Reduce our absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, and business travel categories by 25% by 2030.

Working Towards Net-Zero Value Chain Emissions

To achieve our emissions targets, we have developed a decarbonization roadmap with a focus on the following key levers:

Scope 1 and 2:

  • Reduce energy consumption at SUSE sites by optimizing office space. We recognize the recent changes in where and how people work provide an opportunity to operate more efficiently.
  • Change the energy supply at SUSE offices to renewable sources, focusing on data center sites. Renewable energy, typically wind and solar, create far fewer emissions than burning fossil fuels
  • Optimize our company fleet with more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Scope 3:

  • Engage suppliers to improve the data quality of value-chain-associated emissions, including tracking employee commuting.
  • Reduce electronic waste by prolonging the life of the IT equipment where possible and donating end-of-life IT equipment, supporting a circular economy.
  • Influence key suppliers to commit to science-based emission targets.

Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) mobilizes companies to set science-based targets and boost their competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy. It is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). You can learn more about them by visiting their website here.

SBTi categorizes three types of emissions:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from company facilities and fleet.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity.
  • Scope 3: Indirect emissions from all other value-chain activities - purchasing goods and supplies, business travel, capital goods, and waste generation.

To ensure transparency and accountability, you can find SUSE listed among companies taking action on the SBTi target dashboard.
