SAP HANA on SUSE KVM: Support for 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP5 now supports multiple virtual machines on 2-socket Emerald Rapids systems running SAP HANA. Under this expanded support, it’s possible to deploy one virtual machine per socket, allowing for a total of two virtual machines per hypervisor, with each VM configured with up to 128 vCPUs and 2TB of RAM. In a single-VM scenario, the virtual machine can be configured with up to 256 vCPUs and 4TB of RAM.
This enhancement is reflected in SAP Note 3538596. The move to support multiple VMs on the Emerald Rapids platform follows the successful validation of this configuration. For detailed setup and best practices, consulting the official SUSE and SAP documentation is recommended.
This brief table outlines the supported configurations for running SAP HANA within a KVM virtual machine on a SUSE Linux Enterprise Server hypervisor:
CPU Architecture | SAP HANA scale-up (single VM) | SAP HANA scale-up (multi VM) |
1st Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor (Skylake) | Hypervisor: SLES for SAP 15 SP2
Guest: SLES for SAP 15 SP2 onwards Size: max. 4 sockets, 3 TiB RAM |
not supported |
2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor (Cascade Lake) | Hypervisor: SLES for SAP 15 SP4
Guest: Any supported guest OS(1) Size: max. 4 sockets, 6 TiB RAM |
Hypervisor: SLES for SAP 15 SP4
Guest: Any supported guest OS(1) Size: One VM per socket (max. 4 VMs per host) |
4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor (Sapphire Rapids) | Hypervisor: SLES for SAP 15 SP5
Guest: Any supported guest OS(1) Size: max. 4 sockets, 8 TiB RAM |
Hypervisor: SLES for SAP 15 SP5
Guest: Any supported guest OS(1) Size: One VM per socket (max. 4 VMs per host) |
5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor (Emerald Rapids) | Hypervisor: SLES for SAP 15 SP5
Guest: Any supported guest OS(1) Size: max. 2 sockets, 4 TiB RAM |
Hypervisor: SLES for SAP 15 SP5
Guest: Any supported guest OS(1) Size: One VM per socket (max. 2 VMs per host) |
- Any OS that is supported for the use with the desired CPU platform and SAP HANA may be used as guest OS.
