Automounter/Autofs and other processes hang after reload
This document (000021940) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.
Environment
SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 7
SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 6
Situation
The following pre-maintenance manual process is used whilst third party monitoring software is running a 'df' command every 1 second:
1. Edit auto.direct adding a '#' to the beginning to one or more fs entries
2. Executing 'systemctl reload autofs'
Note that the command is 'reload' not 'restart'...
3. Executing unmount of the mount points that were remarked out
The 'df' process then hangs, automount hangs and subsequent attempts to manipulate filesystems (depending on the command used) also hang.
A reboot is needed to recover.
Resolution
The code is being investigated by SUSE software engineering.
Cause
Bug.
Additional Information
Note that one element of the issue appears to involve timing. Depending on when df is run, in relation to executing autofs reload and unmount, dictates if the issue will occur. Reducing the frequency at which the df command is run, reduces the possibility of the hang occurring.
Work-around: Before execution of any similar pre-maintenance procedure, stop all automated processes that run frequent commands which interrogate the automounted filesystems.
Note that this issue is not known to occur on any release prior to SLES15 SP6.
