User input to Azure Serial Console does not work correctly

This document (000020608) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (All versions)
SUSE Linux Enterprise for SAP Applications (All versions)
Azure Cloud

Situation

Azure Serial Console displays unexpected characters (Ä and Ü) in place of open and closing brackets and does not accept user input as expected.  Cloud end-users may notice this issue after patching.

Resolution

Remove plymouth packages from the system:
# rpm -e libply-boot-client4 libply-splash-core4 libply-splash-graphics4 libply4 plymouth plymouth-branding-SLE plymouth-dracut plymouth-plugin-label plymouth-plugin-label-ft plymouth-plugin-script

Create a zypper lock to prevent plymouth packages from being installed in the future:
# zypper al plymouth*

Cause

plymouth packages may be pulled in as dependencies of patterns-sles-base during patching.  plymouth is not recommended for cloud-based workloads and is not included in cloud images by default.
