DRBD resource is in Diskless state

This document (000020335) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 15

Situation

DRBD status reports a resource's disk is in Diskless state:
sles_server1:~ # drbdadm status usrsaptranssapcarpets
usrsaptranssapcarpets role:Primary
disk:Diskless
sles_server2 role:Secondary
peer-disk:UpToDate

sles_server2:~ # drbdadm status usrsaptranssapcarpets
usrsaptranssapcarpets role:Secondary
disk:UpToDate
sles_server1 role:Primary
peer-disk:Diskless

Resolution

On the node that reports "disk:Diskless" state run:

drbdadm attach usrsaptranssapcarpets

which attaches the local backing block device to the DRBD resource's device.
Verify with:

drbdadm status

The resource should report UpToDate on both nodes.

Cause

Diskless means the resource has never attached to its backing device.
It might have been manually detached using drbdadm detach, or that it automatically
detached after a lower-level I/O error.
