SUSEconnect Validation failed: Uuid should be formatted as UUID

This document (7016361) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Situation

Please note: This applies to SLES for System z only.

An attempt to register a SLES12 zSeries guest with SUSEConnect fails:
SUSEConnect -r <registration code> -e <email>

The following error is returned:
Error: SCC returned 'Validation failed: Uuid should be formatted as UUID' (500)

Using YaST for registration the reported error is:

Error
Registration server error.
Retry registration later.
Details: Validation failed: Uuid should be formatted as UUID |

Resolution

The s390-tools update, s390-tools-1.24.1-39.8.1 released August 2015 includes the patch to resolve the problem.

Cause

SUSEConnect extracts the uuid needed for registration via read_values. If the output is neither empty or a properly formatted uuid the registration will fail. So read_values extracting the uuid needs to print error messages to standard error and not to standard output.
