UEFI based systems boot directly into installation, no option for rescue system

This document (7010054) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1
noticed on: IBM xSeries x3850, HS22

Situation

When booting a UEFI based system from the DVD to start the rescue system, the DVD boot menu does not appear. Instead the installation is started.

Resolution

When booting the server please press F12 or any equivalent key to access the system boot menu. Then choose legacy mode and select to boot from DVD.
To start the system in legacy mode please consult the hardware vendors BIOS / system manual.

A different way to access the rescue system is by aborting the installation in the following way:
  1. Click "Abort" on the installation welcome screen
  2. The following message shows up "An error occurred during the installation", press OK
  3. Select "Start installation"
  4. Select "Start rescue system"
  5. Select "DVD / CD-ROM"

The rescue system will load.
