virtual Network problems after Kernel update (PPC)

This document (3860284) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

An internal network is configured on a IBM Power5 machine. Everything worked fine, but after a SLES Kernel update the LPAR loses contact to the VIO Server.

Resolution

Set the MTU on all systems involved (VIO server and LPAR) to 1500.

Additional Information

Root cause

On either the VIO Server or the LPAR or on both, VIO Server and LPAR, the MTU is set to a value different from the default of 1500. VIO networking can be problematic with this non-standard setting.
