Support for SD card readers

This document (3525303) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

Support for SD card readers is unavailable as of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 workstations (with no Service Packs applied).

Resolution

The majority of built-in cardreaders will not work in the shipping version of SLED 10.  This is due to the failure of the manufacturing companies in providing drivers or specifications regarding the hardware (chips) that are manufactured.  Due to this, any support at all is typically provided by using reverse engineered drivers, something that has been left out in the initial release of SLED 10.

As of November 9, 2006, SUSE is reviewing cardreader support for the product and making efforts to provide support.  Unfortunately, this requires the assistance of manufacturers to complete, and may take an extended period of time before any results can be seen.
