July 31, 2000

SUSE Linux is now available in 2 targeted versions - one for the home office and new user and one for advanced users, appropriate for server implementations.

Nuremberg, Germany and Oakland, CA

SUSE Linux AG, the international technology leader and solution provider in open source operating system (OS) software, offers their new release, SUSE Linux 7.0, in two targeted versions. SUSE Linux 7.0 Personal is tailored to the requirements of Linux newcomers and desktop users. SUSE Linux 7.0 Professional is appropriate for use as a server operating system. Both versions will be available at the end of August.

With SUSE Linux 7.0 Personal, SUSE targets Linux newcomers and home users who want to become acquainted with the advantages of free Unix clones on a desktop computer. Three CD-ROMs provide the core operating system and multiple applications, from the fields of games, multimedia, imaging and Internet, frequently used in the home and office. SUSE Linux 7.0 Personal comes with StarOffice 5.2, a complete office package, that includes word processing, spreadsheets and a presentation application. Due to a revised import and export filter, smooth data exchange is possible with other office applications.

With the YaST2 setup tool, installation is simple thanks to extended hardware recognition. Peripheral devices, such as sound cards and printers, as well as Internet access configuration via modem and ISDN, can be carried out with a few simple keystrokes.

Three entry-level manuals make the newcomer familiar with the new system. The fully illustrated Quick Install Manual explains the installation process step by step with numerous screenshots. Using the new Configuration Manual, the user learns how to integrate printers, scanners, CD burners, graphic, sound and TV cards, as well as how to customize the KDE desktop (K Desktop Environment). The Applications manual gives an overview of the most important functions of the desktop applications included in SUSE Linux, such as StarOffice, Netscape Navigator, Gimp, Acrobat Reader and Midnight Commander.

60 days installation support are included in the purchase price of the SUSE Linux 7.0 Personal. In addition to e-mail and fax, users can access SuSE experts by phone.

SUSE Linux 7.0 Professional provides IT professionals with a comprehensive collection of more than 1500 updated Linux tools and software packages. The software is provided in two formats, a six CD-ROM set and on one DVD, so users have a choice of installation media. The DVD also includes extra software.

Users can implement Intranet and Internet solutions as well as connect and secure heterogeneous networks. The kit includes all the tools to enable Web, proxy, mail and news servers under Linux. SUSE Linux 7.0 Professional, proven as a file and print server, is also an ideal server system for very large and complex database applications due to enhanced raw device support and 4 GB main memory addressing. The optimized support for fully automated installation and SUSE new ALICE (Automatic Linux Installation and Configuration Environment) tool allows rational configuration management for computer networks. Three entry-level manuals plus the SUSE Linux manual provide 1000 pages of up-to-date, firsthand Linux expertise on special subjects such as network configuration and security.

The Professional version includes 90 days of support from SUSE professionals by phone, fax, and email.

Both versions of SUSE Linux 7.0 will be available at the end of August directly from the manufacturer, as well as from book and computer stores. The recommended retail price of SUSE Linux 7.0 Personal is $39.95. SUSE Linux 7.0 Professional is $69.95.
