Introduction

SUSE is pleased to offer a technology preview of our project to run SUSE Enterprise Storage, powered by Ceph, on SUSE CaaS Platform powered by Kubernetes.

We are leveraging the most modern, powerful application management framework to make Ceph lifecycle management easier, and we provide an easy way for SUSE CaaS Platform users to get Kubernetes-native persistent storage for their Kubernetes cluster backed by enterprise-grade software-defined storage.
To bring this to reality, we are heavily invested upstream in a project called Rook (https://rook.io).

Major topics

Containerized SUSE Enterprise Storage on SUSE Container as a Service Platform Technology Preview major topics:

  • Rook::
Rook is an orchestrator for storage services that run in a Kubernetes cluster. Rook turns distributed storage systems into self-managing, self-scaling, self-healing storage services. It automates the tasks of a storage administrator: deployment, bootstrapping, configuration, provisioning, scaling, upgrading, migration, disaster recovery, monitoring, and resource management.
Rook is able to perform the complex management needed for Ceph by implementing the Kubernetes “operator” pattern.
  • The future of SUSE Enterprise Storage on SUSE CaaS Platform:
The work on Rook and Ceph-Rook integration is a concentrated effort upstream. There are many eyes–and many fingers–working to make Ceph better on Kubernetes. We at SUSE are in a good position to make sure that Ceph and Rook work upstream will meet the unique needs of our customers, and we are thrilled that our customers and their needs are able to make upstream better.

Tech Preview is not a beta

This is a Technical Preview and NOT a Beta Program! A Technical Preview doesn’t guarantee the following:

  • Regular and multiple milestones. In another word, a pre-release schedule,
  • Linked to the first point above: Fixes and patches for technical bugs,
  • Upgrade path provided to this technology preview from earlier versions of SUSE Enterprise Storage as this new deployment engine and methodology is completely different.

It will be used for user feedback as we plan to deliver a Kubernetes based installation for SUSE Enterprise Storage in the future!

Warning

Warning: Not production ready

Please be aware that this technology preview is not meant for production deployment, and should not be used in this way.

SUSE encourages participation in the technology preview and looks forward to your feedback to improve our future releases of SUSE enterprise Storage. We hope that you are as excited about this next stage in the evolution of SUSE Enterprise Storage as we are!
