SUSE Manager PostgreSQL database not starting after upgrade 4.2 to 4.3

Environment

SUSE Manager 4.3

Situation

After upgrading SUSE Manager from 4.2 to 4.3 the PostgreSQL database is unable to start. Following error messages within journal can be found:
 
Starting PostgreSQL service...
Job for postgresql.service failed because a timeout was exceeded.
See "systemctl status postgresql.service" and "journalctl -xeu postgresql.service" for details.
16:27:04 Reindexing database. This may take a while, please do not cancel it!
psql: error: connection to server at "localhost" (::1), port 5432 failed: Connection refused
Is the server running on that host and accepting TCP/IP connections?
connection to server at "localhost" (127.0.0.1), port 5432 failed: Connection refused
Is the server running on that host and accepting TCP/IP connections?
16:27:04 The reindexing failed. Please review the PostgreSQL logs at /var/lib/pgsql/data/log

 

Resolution

Verify that postgres database user has a valid shell set in /etc/passwd e.g.:
postgres:x:<id>:<id>:PostgreSQL Server:/var/lib/pgsql:/bin/bash
