Formatting multiple dasd fails with "Error code 2"

This document (7016994) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)

Situation

Formatting multiple dasd with the YaST DASD disk management fails with:
Error Disk formatting failed: Error code 2
For example, 4 disks in parallel will fail 1 out of 4 or 5 times. In the progress bar, one sees only 2 or 3 of the 4 disks formatting, and no progress for the other disks. Then a pop-up will show the error. This can be intermittent and a rerun may succeed the next time.

Resolution

The s390-tools updates released May 2016 include the solution to resolve this problem. Please install the recommended updates.
