We’re excited to share an important step forward for edge deployments: SUSE Linux Micro is now enabled on NVIDIA Jetson Orin platforms! This initial enablement marks a significant milestone for anyone building robust edge AI and IoT solutions, especially those ready to leverage the power of SUSE Edge

Why NVIDIA Jetson is crucial for Edge AI

NVIDIA Jetson devices are at the forefront of edge AI, offering unparalleled performance and efficiency for AI inference and machine learning at the device level. These compact, powerful modules bring the capabilities of data centers closer to where data is generated – across industries like retail, manufacturing, logistics, smart city, agriculture, and healthcare.

For some time, the community has been eager to combine the power of NVIDIA Jetson with the reliability and security of SUSE Edge. We’re pleased to announce that an official documentation is now published to guide you to run SUSE Linux Micro on NVIDIA Jetson. This means you now have a reliable, officially documented path to get started with SUSE Edge projects on Jetson devices.

You can access the full details and begin your setup here: https://documentation.suse.com/sle-micro/6.1/html/Micro-NVIDIA-jetson/index.html

This technology preview extends across various Jetson Orin devices, including Jetson AGX Orin, Jetson Orin NX, Jetson Orin Nano (which is now at USD $249!), and IGX Orin based systems. I have put this to the test, successfully running SUSE Linux Micro 6.1 on Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit. On this setup, I installed k3s, NVIDIA GPU Operator and was able to deploy GPU-sharing (time-slicing) pods.

Building Your Edge AI Vision

SUSE Linux Micro is engineered specifically for the unique demands of the edge. It provides a secure, minimal, and immutable operating system, making it perfect for embedded and edge environments where reliability and small footprint are paramount. The new enablement for NVIDIA Jetson unlocks unprecedented possibilities for deploying sophisticated AI workloads and complex applications right at the edge, exactly where data is generated and immediate processing is required.

This move simplifies the path for developers and organizations to build, deploy, and manage their Edge AI solutions with the confidence that comes from SUSE documentation and support. It’s about giving you the foundational tools to innovate and scale your edge computing strategies effectively.
