Server slows down and csh consumes a lot of memory due to corrupted .history file

A system running tcsh version 6.18.01-8.6.1 on SLES 12 OR 6.20.00-4.9.1 on SLES 15 becomes slow and csh start consuming a lot of memory. In addition, the ~/.history file get corrupted. This behavior was been noticed on system running SAP Netweaver. 


The fix is now released with tcsh version 6.18.01-8.17.1 OR 6.20.00-4.15.1. To implement the fix, kindly: 
  1. Stop all process running via csh. In other words; All processes running from <SID>adm 
  2. Update tcsh by running:
    • zypper install tcsh-6.18.01-8.17.1 on SLES 12 
    • zypper install tcsh-6.20.00-4.15.1 on SLES 15 
  3. Remove the corrupted ~/.history file from <SID>adm home directory. Or any other users who have similar shell.
