How to install GNOME Desktop packages after installing SLES in text mode.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 all Service Packs
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 all Service Packs

Situation

After installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server in text mode (no GNOME desktop), only the lightweight window manager IceWM can be used. On other products, such as the SUMA Proxy Server, only text console may be available.

Resolution

If you want to use GNOME desktop, you need to install the GNOME desktop packages.

1. Activate desktop application product, for example for SLES 15 SP3

# SUSEConnect -p sle-module-desktop-applications/15.3/x86_64

2. Install the GNOME desktop pattern

# zypper in -t pattern gnome_basic
3. Set the system target to "graphical.target"
# systemctl set-default graphical.target

Additional Information

Required packages can be found by runing the following command.
# zypper info --requires -t pattern  <pattern_name>
For example:
# zypper info --requires -t pattern  gnome_basic
