grub2 error: symbol `grub_file_filters' not found

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP2 Running on Microsoft Azure

Situation

After upgrading a gen2 VM running on Microsoft Azure to SLES 15 SP2, the system fails to boot and prints the following error to the Azure VM console: 
 
   Loading Linux 5.3.18-24.49-default ...
   error: symbol `grub_file_filters' not found.
   Loading initial ramdisk ...
   error: symbol `grub_file_filters' not found.

   Press any key to continue...
 

Resolution

If the system was rebooted, the issue can be fixed with these steps: 
 
1- Create a recovery disk and set up a SLES15 SP2 gen2 chroot environment as described here:
 
2- Install the secure-boot shim to the recovery disk:
/usr/sbin/shim-install
 
3- Swap out the VM's OsDisk in the Azure Portal WebUI or azure cli with the recovery disk created in step 1:
az vm update -g <resource group> -n <vm name> --os-disk <recovery disk>


If the system was not rebooted after the upgrade, kindly run: 

/usr/sbin/shim-install

Cause

The issue is escalated to SUSE Engineering and Microsoft.
