Disable the user list on the login screen in SLE15

This document (000019890) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 15 SP2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 15 SP1

Situation

By default, the login screen for SLE15 will show a list of available users to chose from for logging in.  For security reasons, it's best to disable the user list and provide only login user name prompts.

Resolution

To disable the user list so that only a username prompt appears on the login screen do the following as root:

1. Using your favorite editor create the gdm profile which contains the following lines:

/etc/dconf/profile/gdm

user-db:user
system-db:gdm
file-db:/usr/share/gdm/greeter-dconf-defaults

2. Then create the following file and add the following contents:

/etc/dconf/db/gdm.d/00-login-screen

[org/gnome/login-screen]
# Do not show the user list
disable-user-list=true

3. Update the system database:

#dconf update

5. Restart display-manager service:

#systemctl restart display-manager.service

After the desktop restarts the login screen should now present the user with login name and password prompts.
