sysstat timers disabled & missing SADC options after upgrade to sysstat-12.0.2-150000.3.40.1

This document (000022005) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15

Situation

After updating from sysstat-12.0.2-3.33.1 to sysstat-12.0.2-150000.3.40.1, the following behavior is observed:

The migration of sysstat from cron jobs to systemd timers leaves the new timers disabled.
The following timers are affected:

  • sysstat-collect.timer
  • sysstat-summary.timer

The configuration file /etc/sysstat/sysstat shows an empty value for SADC_OPTIONS:
     SADC_OPTIONS=" "
      instead of the expected
      SADC_OPTIONS=" -S ALL"

This causes disk statistics not to be collected.

Resolution

An update to the latest version of sysstat and systemd-presets-branding-SLE is scheduled to be released in an upcoming maintenance update for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 environments.

It is important to update both packages: sysstat and the systemd-presets-branding-SLE package simultaneously.

The update will rename the timers with new presets enabled by default:

  • sysstat_collect.timer (replaces sysstat-collect.timer)
  • sysstat_summary.timer (replaces sysstat-summary.timer)
    • And corrects the /etc/sysstat/sysstat configuration, restoring the proper SADC_OPTIONS value.

    After the update, to verify that the timers are enabled and active run the following commands:

    • systemctl status sysstat_collect.timer
    • systemctl status sysstat_summary.timer

    Cause

    During the migration from cron jobs to systemd timers, the newly introduced systemd units did not ship with presets enabling them by default. As a result, after the upgrade the timers were installed in a disabled state.

    A packaging issue also left the SADC_OPTIONS variable empty, preventing disk statistics from being collected.

    Additional Information

    For systems that can not be updated in time, run the following command to manually enable the timers:

    • systemctl enable --now sysstat-collect.timer sysstat-summary.timer
