SSSD fails to start when ifp is enabled

This document (000021435) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 15 SP5
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP5
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 15 SP5
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 15 SP4
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP4
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 15 SP4

Situation

1) SSSD fails to start with these errors:
Apr 16 10:36:45 server001 sssd[30690]: Could not exec /usr/lib/sssd/sssd_ifp --uid 0 --gid 0 --logger=files, reason: No such file or directory
Apr 16 10:36:45 server001 sssd[30693]: Could not exec /usr/lib/sssd/sssd_ifp --uid 0 --gid 0 --logger=files, reason: No such file or directory
...
Apr 16 10:30:53 server001 sssd[24841]: Exiting the SSSD. Could not restart critical service [ifp].

2) ifp is added as a service in /etc/sssd/sssd.conf :

[sssd]
config_file_version = 2
services = nss, pam, ifp
domains = example.com
...

3) the package libsss_simpleifp0 is installed on system.

Resolution

Install the package sssd-dbus
# zypper install sssd-dbus

then restart SSSD:
# systemctl restart sssd

Cause

The problem is caused by a missing dependency: the package sssd-dbus which provides sssd_ifp is not installed in the system.

Additional Information

sssd-dbus package provides the D-Bus responder of sssd, called InfoPipe, which allows information from SSSD to be transmitted over the system bus.
