Intel Graphics Card drivers for Service Pack 1

This document (3996311) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
Intel Graphics Card - 855GM, 852GM, 865G, 915G, 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 946GZ, Q965 and G965

Situation

Driver for an Intel graphics card may not have been available prior to Service Pack 1 (SP1) which would cause the system to use the vesa or fbdev graphics driver. This does not provide 3D acceleration. Other performance issues could be evident.

Resolution

The following packages are provided as of service pack 1 (SP1) to support the newer Intel graphics chipsets.

If you installed SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 pre-SP1 and your Intel graphics card was not supported you will most likely be running with the "vesa" or "fbdev" graphics driver. Install the packages listed below from the SP1 distribution (the system must also be upgraded to SP1). To install the packages open YaST and select Software-->Software Management then search for and select the following:

intel-i810-agpgart-kmp-default/smp
Updated intel-agp.ko kernel module supporting the Intel(R) 855GM, 852GM, 865G, 915G, 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 946GZ, Q965 and G965 Graphics chipsets.

intel-i810-drm-kmp-default/smp
Installs the drm.ko and i915.ko kernel drm modules that support the Intel(R) 855GM, 852GM, 865G, 915G, 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 946GZ, Q965 and G965 Graphics chipsets.

intel-i810-Mesa
Intel 3D graphics drivers for SLED10, based on Mesa 6.4.2.
The i915_dri.so driver supports the Intel(R) 855GM, 852GM, 915G, 915GM, 945G and 945GM chipsets.
The i965_dri.so driver supports the Intel(R) 946GZ, Q965 and G965 chipsets.

intel-i810-xorg-x11
Intel 2D graphics driver for SLED10's Xorg 6.9.
Supports the Intel(R) 855GM, 852GM, 865G, 915G, 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 946GZ, Q965 and G965 Graphics chipsets.

When proceeding with the installation accept any changes required by YaST and then exit YaST when complete.

Now, close any applications, open a terminal window and enter the following commands:

su
(To become the root user if you are not already)

init 3
(This will take you to a text based login)

Login as root and run the following command:

sax2 -r -m 0=i810

When the graphic interface comes up take the selection to "Change Configuration". Select the appropriate resolution and colors (24 bit) then save and test the configuration. If it looks good save it and exit sax2. When back to the command line enter the command:

init 5
(This will bring up the graphic login)
