SUSE Linux, the international technology leader and solutions provider in Open Source operating system software, announced the November availability of KDE 2.0, the latest graphical user interface version.
K Desktop Environment (KDE) 2.0 - aka Kopernicus, is designed to make Linux and Unix desktops easier to use. Both Linux newbies and home users benefit from a great number of additional functions included on the latest release of this Internet-focused desktop. The modular KDE series is the result of work by several hundred developers from more than 50 countries, all dedicated to the development of open source software. KDE is the standard GUI for Linux and other UNIX operating systems.
KDE 2.0 includes Konqueror, the universal browser displaying web pages and enabling the user to manage and view files with the click of a mouse. Konqueror supports the latest technical specifications of HTML 4.0, Java, and JavaScript.
The integrated program package KOffice is another new feature of KDE 2.0. Apart from standard applications like word processing and spreadsheet programs, KOffice also boasts a presentation program and a formula editor. The improved inter-application drag & drop functions help speed up daily office chores. Kicker, the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, combines a quick start menu with central terminal services and maintains order on the desktop with a clock, calendar, and a task bar. The KDE team has revised and improved a host of tools including the organizer, e-mail client, and various media players. SuSE KDE 2.0 allows the use of KDE 1.x applications.
The update package KDE 2.0 for SUSE Linux includes the KDE 2.0 CD and an 80-page manual. Starting in late November, the KDE update can be obtained at Amazon.com at the price of $12.95. KDE 2.0 for SUSE Linux is also available for download from ftp.suse.com/pub/suse free of charge.
