SUSE Linux, the international technology leader and solutions provider in open source operating system (OS) software, today introduced their free test environment for the new 64-bit architecture. This environment is accessible through the Internet, allowing Application developers to test and adapt their Linux applications to the 64-bit-processor online.

By offering remote access to the compilefarm via the Internet, SUSE and Intel jointly support programmers in porting their Linux-applications to the IA 64-bit platform and its first processor, the Itanium.

Additionally, SUSE provides the preliminary version of the complete SuSE Linux 7.0 for iA-64 to be downloaded for free from its ftp server. SuSE Linux 7.0 for iA-64 is a complete operating system including a complete set of networking tools for programming and Internet/intranet applications for Linux. This offering, in conjunction with free access to the compilefarm, guarantees that SUSE Linux applications will deliver 64-bit offerings simultaneously with Intel's Itanium.

"Due to the close cooperation of the Linux-community with Intel engineers, we are able to port the core components of the Linux environment and support 64-bit performance at an early stage", explained Dirk Hohndel, CTO of SuSE Linux AG. "Linux early inclusion in the iA-64 development emphasizes the significance of the Linux OS in the enterprise market."

Interested software developers are invited and encouraged to register at http://www.suse.de/cgi-bin/ia64.pl to gain free access to the password protected iA-64 compilefarm. The complete downloadable version of SUSE Linux 7.0 for iA-64 is available, free of charge, at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ia64
