This document (000019674) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP5
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP4

Situation

During system shutdown, when the message stopping the LVM2 metadata daemon is seen on screen, the shutdown stops for 90 seconds, then continues it's shutdown.

Resolution

The SLE15 SP1 lvm2 maintenance update (lvm2-2.02.180-12.20.2) released August 2020 includes the patch to resolve the problem.
The SLES12 SP5 lvm2 maintenance update (lvm2-2.02.180-9.41.1) released September 2020 includes the patch to resolve the problem.
The SLES12 High Availability SP4 and SP5 lvm-clvm maintenance update (lvm2-clvm-2.02.180-9.41.1) released September 2020 includes the patch to resolve the problem.

Cause

The lvmetad process was not responding to the SIGTERM.
An endless stream of commands contacting lvmetad prevented the process to finish.
After waiting whatever /etc/systemd/systemd.conf:TimeoutStopSec is set to, systemd sends a SIGKILL and lvmetad exits.
