Mount fails for EXT4 filesystem with error message "group descriptors corrupted!"

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 3 (SLES 12 SP3)

Situation

When mounting a EXT4 filesystem, it fails with the following type of error messages:
For example:
 Sep 12 12:15:35 servername mount[3417]: mount: mount /dev/mapper/vg1-lv1 on /usr/dir1 failed: Structure needs cleaning
 Sep 12 12:15:35 servername kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-10): ext4_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 0 overlaps block group descriptors
 Sep 12 12:15:35 servername kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-10): group descriptors corrupted!
 
However, running fsck to check this EXT4 filesystem does not complain of any error.
 
 

Resolution

This bug is fixed in the kernel version 4.4.155-94.50.1 or higher.

Cause

This error is due to a bug in the EXT4 filesystem introduced in kernel version 4.4.140-94.42.1.

Additional Information

The dumpe2fs output shows that "meta_bg" Filesystem feature is enabled.
For example:
# dumpe2fs /dev/mapper/vg1-lv1
...
Filesystem features:      has_journal ext_attr dir_index filetype meta_bg extent flex_bg sparse_super huge_file uninit_bg dir_nlink extra_isize
