suse_register aborts with curl error 60 while trying to register against Novell Customer Center

This document (7017919) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3 (SLES 11 SP3)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2 (SLES 11 SP2)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 (SLES 11 SP1)

Situation

Trying to register fails with unknow CA certificate error:
linux:/ # suse_register -a regcode-sles=<your_regcode> -a email=<your email> -L /root/.suse_register.log
ERROR: Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with known CA certificates: (60)
(2)

Resolution

Change configuration of the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to allow SSLv3 connections.

Cause

suse_register tries SSLv3 connect to Novell Customer Center which then initiate TLS handshake. Intrusion Detection System prevents SSLv3 connect attempt.

Additional Information

With IDS denying SSLv3 connection the result is errno 104 which means connection reset:
linux# openssl s_client -connect www.novell.com:443 |tee logfile.txt
write:errno=104
CONNECTED(00000003)

Trying TSL1 will work fine:
linux# openssl s_client -connect secure-www.novell.com:443 -tls1

CONNECTED(00000003)
