ocfs2 online resize (OCFS2)

This document (7002538) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2

Situation

It is possible to do an online resize of an ocfs2 Filesystem with SLES10 SP2 and later versions of ocfs2. SLES10 SP2 provides ocfs2 version 1.4.0.
Caveat! On SLES10 SP2 an online resize is only possible if ocfs2 uses the kernel cluster stack, o2cb. Meaning
O2CB_HEARTBEAT_MODE="kernel" is set in /etc/sysconfig/o2cb.
On SLE11 any cluster stack can be used for online resizing of ocfs2.

Resolution

Use of online resize is through the command

   tunefs.ocfs2 -S  device  [blocks-count]

from the man page

   -S, --volume-size
       Grow  the  size of the OCFS2 file system. If blocks-count is not
       specified, tunefs.ocfs2 extends the volume to the  current  size
       of the device.
