The salt minion ignores the master entry in the minion configuration file

This document (7023641) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 3 (SLES 12 SP3)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 2 (SLES 12 SP2)
SUSE Enterprise Storage 5
SUSE Enterprise Storage 4

Situation

Configuring or changing the "master:" entry in the "/etc/salt/minion" configuration file does not take effect, the minion attempts to connect to a different salt master than what is configured as can be seen by looking at the "/var/log/salt/minion" log file.

Resolution

Change or remove any configuration files that also have "master:" entries in the "/etc/salt/minion.d/" directory and then restart the salt-minion service.

Cause

At some point the servers were configured to connect to a different salt master and custom configuration files were created in the "/etc/salt/minion.d/" directory. Any "master:" entries specified in configuration files in this directory will override what is configured in the main salt-minion configuration file at "/etc/salt/minion".
