During the upgrade to SUSE Enterprise Storage 5 salt stage 1 returns an error for the master_minion

This document (7022270) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Enterprise Storage 3
SUSE Enterprise Storage 4
SUSE Enterprise Storage 5

Situation

While performing the steps to update an existing SUSE Enterprise Storage (SES) 3 or 4 cluster to SES 5, when executing step 9. "Run Stage 1 to create all possible roles:" as documented in the upgrade section of the SES 5 documentation, the following error is returned:

master_minion            : ['Could not find minion $minion_name. Check /srv/pillar/ceph/master_minion.sls'

Resolution

Verify the minion name included in the file "/srv/pillar/ceph/master_minion.sls" matches the name exactly as returned with for example the command "salt-key -L" or "salt '*' test.ping".

If needed after updating the file "/srv/pillar/ceph/master_minion.sls" run the "salt-run state.orch ceph.stage.1" command again.

Cause

The master_minion name in the "/srv/pillar/ceph/master_minion.sls" file is incorrect.

Additional Information

For example if the "salt '*' test.ping" command displays the below for the master minion:

ses-master01.lab.domain:
    True

The name included for the master minion should show:

master_minion: ses-master01.lab.domain
