During the upgrade from SES 7 to SES 7.1 salt-minions fail to sign-in to the master

This document (000020628) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Enterprise Storage 7
SUSE Enterprise Storage 7.1

Situation

With the upgrade, the admin / master node is normally the first node to be migrated from SLES15 SP2 to SLES15 SP3.

Once the admin node is running with SLES15 SP3 and the default salt RPMs after the migration, registered salt-minions can fail to connect to the master with something like the following error being logged, excerpt:

salt-minion[1232838]: [ERROR   ] Sign-in attempt failed: {'enc': 'pub', 'pub_key': '-----BEGIN PUBLIC KEY---- ...
salt-minion[1232838]: [ERROR   ] Error while bringing up minion for multi-master. Is master at <salt_mast.dns> responding?

Resolution

After migration of the admin / master node also update it with the latest available salt packages and then restart the salt-minion services.

Cause

The salt-master is not using the latest available salt package versions immediately after the migration to SLES15 SP3.

Additional Information

Salt packages are backward compatible with the latest available salt versions for a distribution. After the migration, the admin / master node is not running the latest versions.

Immediately after the migration:

salt-3002.2-150300.53.7.2

Latest available version for SLES15 SP3 at the time of writing this however is:

salt-3002.2-150300.53.10.1

To update salt on the migrated admin / master node simply execute for example:

zypper up -y salt salt-master salt-minion
