Patching of clients using SSM and Action chain finishes with Error Code -1

This document (000020311) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Manager 4.1 Server

Situation

Patching of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4 (LTSS) clients using SSM and Action Chain finishes with following error message:
{ "file_|-mgrchannels_repo_|-/etc/zypp/repos.d/susemanager:channels.repo_|-managed": { "comment": "File /etc/zypp/repos.d/susemanager:channels.repo is in the correct state", "pchanges": {}, "name": "/etc/zypp/repos.d/susemanager:channels.repo", "start_time": "15:04:23.088792", "result": true, "duration": 60.729, "__run_num__": 0.0, "changes": {}, "__id__": "mgrchannels_repo" }, "pkg_|-mgr_regular_patches_|-mgr_regular_patches_|-patch_installed": { "comment": "An error was encountered while downloading package(s): Zypper command failure: System management is locked by the application with pid 6227 (zypper).\nClose this application before trying again.", "name": "mgr_regular_patches", "start_time": "15:04:32.913083", "result": false, "duration": 1576.774, "__run_num__": 2.0, "changes": {}, "__id__": "mgr_regular_patches" },

Clients are properly patched, however, at the end, the error message occurs. When clients are patched using SSM without Action Chain, no such error message occurs. No such error occurs when other supported operating systems are patched using SSM and Action chain.

Resolution

The issue can be mitigated by following workaround:
  1. Update the salt-minion first on the affected clients using SSM
  2. Patch the "overall" system using SSM and action chain

Cause

Not known at the moment (probably caused by old version of salt-minion used when the patch is triggered)
