zypper/rpm warns about unsupported V3 key after upgrade from SLES 11 SP4 to SLES 15

This document (000019712) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server SLES 15 (any Service Pack level)

Situation

Following the upgrade to SLES 15,  any zypper  or rpm  command prints the following warning :
warning: Unsupported version of key: V3

Resolution

Remove the old gpg keys from the rpm database as follows :
zypper ref | grep "gpg-pubkey-" | xargs rpm -e

Cause

There is an old V3 key in the rpm database that is not longer supported by rpm version V4.x. It has been replaced with a new key, but automatic key removal does not happen during upgrade.

This is a manual task.
