Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

When GUI is set to 8bit color depth applications like YaST2 are displayed in incorrect colors and patterns making the text unreadable. This problem was found in Gnome and KDE desktop managers while on KDE even with errand colors the text is readable well.
Fast way to reproduce and observe the issue is following:
  1. Set the desktop to 8bit color
  2. Re-login
  3. Start YaST2

Screens of any YaST2 module are incorrectly colored and text in them is unreadable.

Resolution

The configuration with 8bit color depth is considered obsolete and unsupported and it is recommended to use any of higher settings for display color. If however 8bit color depth is required use of either KDE or less graphic-demanding window managers like FVWM is advised.
