This document (7004974) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11

Situation

You want to see which patches need to be applied to your server.

Resolution

If you have already run a supportconfig, then you can see the patches needed by typing grep '| Needed' updates.txt. This assumes you are in the directory where the supportconfig files have been extracted. For example:

# grep '| Needed' updates.txt
SLES11-Updates | slessp0-gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good  | 984     | security    | Needed
SLES11-Updates | slessp0-sles-manuals_en              | 1003    | recommended | Needed
SLES11-Updates | slessp0-yast2-ldap-server            | 896     | security    | Needed

You can also run a command line tool that will show you the same needed patches.

Below are examples of commands that are run on each SLES version to show needed patches.

SLE10:
# rug pch | grep '| Needed'
SLES10-SP2-Updates          | slesp2-apache2         | 6571-0  | security    | Needed
SLES10-SP2-Updates          | slesp2-glibc           | 6597-0  | recommended | Needed
SLES10-SP2-Updates          | slesp2-kernel          | 6632-0  | security    | Needed
SLES10-SP2-Updates          | slesp2-openssl         | 6654-0  | security    | Needed

SLE11:
# /usr/bin/zypper --non-interactive --no-gpg-checks patches | grep '| Needed'
SLED11-Updates | sledsp0-acroread                    | 1059    | security    | Needed
SLED11-Updates | sledsp0-nfs-client                  | 841     | optional    | Needed
