After glibc timezone update, java calculates wrong time for Europe/Zurich

This document (7004552) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11

Situation

After updating the glibc timezone information, a third-party java implementation calculates the wrong local time for Europe/Zurich

Resolution

Use the Java Timezone Updater Tool to bring the java timezone database back in sync with the libc timezone database. For Oracle Java, refer to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/tzupdater-readme-136440.html for instructions.

Cause

Java keeps its own timezone database that needs to be in sync with the system timezone database. The timezone maintenance updates provided by SUSE provide the necessary updates for the java implementations that come with the SUSE Linux Enterprise products. Other java implementations may need to have their timzone information updated by other means.
