Desktop effects stop working on SLED11SP2

This document (7000927) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 2
Intel Corporation Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller

Situation

Desktop effects stop working on systems using Integrated Graphics Controller on Intel mainboards after applying online updates.

Resolution

Please delete the NVIDIA or ATI related repositories and their respective GPG keys using the YaST2 Software Repositories module. Remove all NVIDIA or ATI related packages from the system and restart the graphical environment as root using rcxdm restart (please make sure you save every document before issuing this command).

Cause

This issue may be experienced if the NVIDIA or ATI repository was imported and a 3rd party glx library is loaded during X startup. /var/log/Xorg.X.log (where .X. is the number of the display X was started on, e.g. Xorg.0.log for the first display) would show:

(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/updates//extensions/libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
    compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
    Module class: X.Org Server Extension
(II) NVIDIA GLX Module  290.10  Wed Nov 16 19:49:02 PST 2011
(II) Loading extension GLX

even if the intel driver gets loaded.
