Installation hangs at proposal/partitions_distribution_calculator

This document (7024271) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15

Situation

SLES for SAP 15 GA installation with multipath configured to boot from SAN. Six or more LUNs are visible to the server from the SAN. After clicking "Next" on the "Choose Operating System Edition" screen, it takes some time to get to the partition proposal or the installer simply hangs.

Resolution

There is an unsigned DUD (driver update disk) available to work around the issue containing TEST packages. Once the fix is confirmed, a link for an signed DUD will be provided in this TID as an official PTF.

This DUD file should be applied during installation.

Please follow the instructions here to configure the SLE15 installer to use the DUD

Additionally, the "insecure=1" kernel command line option will be required until the official signed DUD is released.

Cause

The root cause is that SLE-15GA initially tries to find the optimal storage proposal using the whole set of available disks. The more LUNs visible, the longer this process takes. All possibilities are calculated and then compared to decide the optimal disk configuration. Having 10 or more disks results in a huge number of possible combinations about distributing partitions, PVs, LVs, etc.

Any installation based on SLE-15-SP1 (or newer) will not be affected as the behavior has been modified to use a single-disk OS installation as the default proposal.

Additional Information

The bug fix will go into the next maintenance update for yast2-storage-ng.
