Drivers compiled against some kernels produce crash when used with newer kernels

This document (7022948) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)

Situation

Drivers compiled against the following kernels:-

                         Jan-05-2018     3.12.74-60.64.69.1 (LTSS)
                         Jan-16-2018     3.12.74-60.64.72.1 (s390x only) (LTSS)

and that used the defined 'alternatives', are not 'portable' and will produce a crash when used with kernels newer than those listed above.

Resolution

The 'alternatives' definition was corrected in the kernel: Feb-22-2018     3.12.74-60.64.82.1  (LTSS)

Recompiling any affected drivers using this kernel or any later kernel should again produce a 'portable' driver.
