Kernel Panic When Sub NUMA Clustering (SNC) Enabled

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4

Situation

When Sub NUMA Clustering (SNC) is enabled in the system firmware, a kernel panic may occur when SLES 11 SP4 is installed or as it boots up with this message: 
 
"Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt"

 

Resolution

The kernel panic should be avoided by disabling SNC in the system firmware setup.

Cause

Sub NUMA Clustering is not supported on SLES 11 SP4.
Sub NUMA Clustering is supported in SLES 12 SP2 and later.
