Files copied or moved to ReiserFS on different volume missing permissions

This document (7018489) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)

Situation

Files copied or moved to a different ReiserFS filesystem, for example during setup of the chroot environment for bind9 if /var is a separate filesystem, are missing the group and other permission bits with kernel 3.0.101-88.1 and 3.0.101-93.1. The issue does not occur with previous kernel builds.

Resolution

An upcoming kernel maintenance update is planned to fix this regression. In the meantime, affected customers with a SUSE Linux Enterprise Server subscription can ask the customer service for a PTF package.

Cause

The regression occurs due to an error in a security fix for POSIX ACLs (CVE-2016-7097)
